When it comes to sleep, among various factors, the duration of your sleep is one of the most important ones out there. I’ve often found myself wondering if I got enough hours of sleep, or what if I need more or what if I oversleep, often pondering about how the duration is affecting my quality of sleep as well as my general well-being.

Looking up the sleep schedules of some famous personalities with great achievements helped me understand, at least a little regarding what kind of sleep schedule I may need for my kind of daily schedule.

Sleep Schedule of The Space Expert

One of the interesting personalities I came across was the world famous ‘Mars enthusiast’ Elon Musk. Elon Musk, whose estimated IQ is always a subject of discussion on online forums, believes in sleeping for no more than six hours a night.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, in an episode of the podcast ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ enlightened the audience regarding his sleep as well as professional habits. He believes that there is a direct relationship between less sleep and decrease in productivity and so claims that he sleeps no more than six hours a night because sleeping less than that decreases total productivity.

During the podcast, he has admitted that he often tends to work a lot and even schedules meeting after midnight. So while most worker bees might be returning home in the evening, the cosmic genius works beyond the stipulated working hours, before sunrise till after sunset. Elon Musk, more like Elon Dusk.

In fact, to try and fit more work into his schedule, in the past, he has even attempted to reduce his precious sleep hours and that is exactly how he realised that sleeping any less than 6 hours, reduces his productivity. Six hours are just enough for him.

Earlier, Musk said then that one has to work at least 80 hours a week to be successful. He went even further and said that it could be as much as 100 hours if you really want to change the world you live in. Talking about himself, he even told how some days he couldn’t get his sleep hours in a stretch and instead slept every few hours in between his work hours and ended up working for 120 hours or something, on some weeks.

Now for an average adult individual, a 7-8 hour sleep is recommended by medical professionals. So how is it that so many celebrities and famous personalities not only survive but also thrive on way less or way more hours than recommended? I know that if I sleep for an hour less than my usual routine schedule, I will be drowsy, tired, moody and sleepy for the rest of my day. However, these people customise their routines, and some people, just don’t need a lot of sleep.

These rarely found short sleepers, which apparently also include Elon Musk, could be wired so because of their genetics. I guess Mars’ first extra-terrestrial species would be the ‘rare earthly short sleeper.’

The bad news is, if you’re not a short sleeper, this 5-6 hour sleep is not exactly the perfect idea for your productivity.  Not getting enough sleep can affect your ability to communicate, solve problems, and recall information.

So, unless you’ve established a routine with 6 hours of sleep and/or have a body clock that allows you to function efficiently and stay healthy with the Elon six-hour sleep method, it is a good idea to clock in on those 8 valuable hours. Let your internal clock decide for you.

As we have heard through many accounts, including on Business Insider, about how Tesla employees have frequently seen the Space Shinobi sleeping curled under tables, desks, and even on the earthly factory floor. So who knows, maybe six hours is enough, maybe it is not. They might be working for Musk, after all, we know about his productivity.

However, after reviewing the sleep schedule of all my favourite celebrities, I figured it is best to let my body decide for me, while also maintaining a routine and a schedule and always turning to a certified health expert in case of any queries or complaints as only they can accurately prescribe how many hours of sleep we need on the earth, at least. Maybe one day Elon Musk can tell us how many hours of sleep are efficient on Mars.
